Strabo l. 4. Ε᾿ν δὲ τῷ Ω᾿κεανῷ φασιν εἶναι νῆσον μικρὰν, οὐ πάνυ πελαγίαν, προκειμένην τῆς ἐκβολῆς τȏυ Λείγηρος ποταμοῦ. οἰκεῖν δὲ ταύτην, τὰς τῶ Σαμνιτῶν γυν αῖκας, Διονύσῳ κατεχομένας, καὶ ἱλασκομένας τὸν θεὸν τοῦτον τελεταῖς τε καὶ ἀλλαις ἱεροπορΐαις ἐξιλεομένας, etc. Ubi Casaubon. Dionys. Periegetes unus est, ut puto, e veteribus, qui huius rei meminerit. Sic enim ille:
Α῎τχι δὲ νησιάδων ἔτερος πόρος, ἔνθα γυναῖκες
Α᾿νδρῶν ἀντιπέρηθεν ἀγαυῶν Α᾿μνιτάων
Ο᾿ρνύ μεν αι τελέουσι κατὰ νόμον ἱερὰ Βάκχῳ.
Ad quem locum Eustath. Strabanis verba profert, et legit Α᾿μνιτῶν, deficiente litera σ. ut in Halmydessus, pro Salmydessus, etc. Stephano urbs est Britanniae, decepto, opinor, propter locorum vicinitatem. Nic. Lloyd. Regionis id potius nomen esse, Samnitium videl. monet Salmas. et Βρεττανίαν, apud Stephanum Βρεττίαν esse, h. e. Brutiorum terram, ad Solin. p. 321.
